We are living in times of transformation, not in times of crisis.
A crisis is a short-term accident, and things can continue as before once the crisis is over. Transformation is a long-term change that does look like a crisis as we look at the short-term effects taking place when the system adapts and shifts.
This transformation that we are seeing concerns the way central decisions and processing are being treated. Autonomous Local decision-making is becoming stronger and stronger. This can be seen in part by the way technology based companies are creating social organizations with a greater geographical scope and population than before. People are organizing, learning, comparing on a grand scale.
The global markets have created a need for local identity and uniqueness that says “its me”. This is particularly important in a world where every shopping mall is identical, no matter where you go on the planet.
1. Business organization
The classical hierarchical structure is militaristic in nature with a central strategic decision system filtering down the tactical operational ranks.
At times, different operations such as purchasing and sales operate at different scales. For example, we could see a central purchasing service with foreign supplier and a distributed sales system with small shops catering to local costumers. This gives very little market adaptability, a rigid logistics and control system and leaves only a small place for creativity and experimentation. All this is well known.
2. Evolution of society and products
We have seen with computer age technology much more reactive systems, with a great deal of local content and creativity. Facebook is a case in point where every user who creates an account manages his content, photos, videos, and communication with his community as if he had his own personal Internet site. The benefit to the user is important. He can experiment communication, creating flash events, and a new social behavior is immerging around the social network medium. Facebook provides guidelines, for behavior and for content, and a system to control that these guidelines are observed. Within these guideline, each free to post as he wants.
3. Necessary business evolutions
Of course, I’m talking about products at this point, more than actual business models were the actual concentration of money prevents this type of local initiative. But the truth of the matter is that the trend is emerging for business models as well. In this case, the central government system acts like a maker of guideline and provider of opportunity and at times financing, for local initiatives and groupings. The adhering company would be a follower of the concept and guidelines provided by the certifying leader, and would be able to adjust to its market, proceed with small scale experimentations and provide hands on service and quality to it local costumers without suffering heavy organizational hierarchy and rigid and long decision process.
Each individual business unit will exercise full responsibility for its activity. But since the costumer will be reassured by the operational guidelines issued by the certifying leader, it will be up to all involved to both control and correct. The mutation of our society thus calls for more ethics and social awareness on the business partners end as the consumers at large are raising their level of social and ethical consciousness.
